The Greek Alphabet Song
By Peter on Oct 15, 2007 in New Testament Greek
Quite by accident, I found a site with a recording of a Greek alphabet song. I personally am far too shy to sing this aloud, even by myself, but this could be a good memory aid for those just learning the Greek alphabet. The rest of the site is pretty interesting as well. The author is a Christian Missionary in Mozambique with his family and has interesting little stories about life there.

Pity they have such a thick ‘r’, but oh well :-). I guess it’s a nice way to learn the Greek alphabet.

My older brother was in a fraternity in college, and he made me learn the Greek alphabet when I was in elementary school. I can still run through it pretty fast, although listening to the song in the link above it seems I learned to pronounce some of the letters differently.

The better part of two decades ago, in fourth grade I learned the Greek alphabet to the tune of “Yankee Doodle”*. We were taught the pronunciations of some of the letters incorrectly, but as I recall, it was part of a unit on the languages of the world, so it was the only thing we learned about Greek. I can still sing it quickly, though I can’t say I’ve ever put the knowledge to much practical use.
*Try it, it works rather well… “Yankee Doodle went to London” –> “alpha beta gamma delta”, except you run out of letters before the tunes up, so we added to the end, “that’s the Grecian alphabet and we are all Greek schooolars”. I guess we were precocious kids.
