How Many Days In Each Month: The Thai Way
By thomas on Jan 23, 2008 in Thai
Inspired partly by this article, Rikker at Thai 101 has posted a great article about how the Thais remember the months. I thought the Japanese had it easy, but the Thai way is much more elegant.
In Rikker’s words:
In Thai it’s extremely simple: the number of days is encoded directly into the names of the months.
To find out how, read the original article here: How the Thais remember months. It’s a quick read and extremely interesting. Check it out!

Don’t you use the ‘knuckle-system’?

The knuckle system never fails in a pinch. :) Thanks for the link, thomas.

It’s funny though that you can see in the names how much days the month has.
In the Netherlands (especially older people) use this trick for something else: If there’s a ‘r’ in the name of the month, you better dress good, because it can get cold.

Slight deviation, but the Netherlands example reminded me that in Spanish and Italian (and maybe others) the same method is used for when to eat/not eat shellfish - because of their reproducive cycle.
Cheers.
